Although the sites are categorized under the four headings below, this section contains links to sites that overlap into the other areas. It would be worthwhile using the descriptions of the sites provided as a more useful guide to their content.

UK policy

http://www.doh.gov.uk/index.html "The Department of Health site is kept well updated and has a number of press releases and recent health related news. Information is available on tobacco policy, adverse effects and advertising. A search that allows you to look for statistics on various health related issues including a number of smoking and tobacco studies is particularly useful. The links section gives access to some government departments and ministries of health in the European Union."

Following evidence submitted between November 1999 and February 2000 this unanimously-agreed all-party committee report states that the tobacco industry's 'imperatives have nothing in common with the public health community'."

http://www.who.dk/ The official Web site of the WHO Regional Office for Europe (WHO/Europe) provides country-specific and topic-specific health information and is aimed at people who influence health policy in the WHO European Region as well as the media.


http://europa.eu.int/comm/health/index_en.html Directorate General V is the division within the EC responsible for health and tobacco control.The site provides a number of press releases, outlines of campaigns and describes a number of European initiatives for smoking prevention. A large volume of information is available, mainly concerning the policy side of tobacco control and anti-tobacco campaigns. Many of the articles are available in a number of languages and these are listed next to the article title where appropriate on this useful and easy to use site.


http://www.eehc.dk/ "European Environment and Health Committee is responsible for promoting European tobacco control legislation under free market regulations. Although there is very little on the site regarding tobacco at present, the occasional article may prove useful."


http://www.europarl.eu.int/ The website of the European Parliament. Although not tobacco related the site outlines current issues in European politics which inevitably include tobacco issues from time to time.

Economics

http://www.worldbank.org/tobacco/reports.htm "A World Bank report on the Economics of Tobacco control. This is an interesting and useful report that gives good information to anyone interested in the economics of tobacco control, approaching the area from a number of angles. Available in English, Arabic, Chinese, French and Japanese."


http://www.imf.org/external/pubs/ft/fandd/1999/12/jha.htm A report by the International Monetary Fund from 1999 that claims 'Contrary to long-standing beliefs, tobacco-control policies can lead to huge health benefits without harming economies.' Well illustrated, this report would be useful to those interested in the economics of tobacco control despite not being particularly up to date.

Regulation

This page provides a number of articles that are available online that cover a number of issues. Also available are online videos and press releases. A very interesting and useful site, available in English and some in Spanish.

http://www.hda-online.org.uk/ The Health Development Agency aims to support and enhance efforts to improve health and reduce inequalities of people living in England. A number of tobacco/smoking related articles are available and cover various areas. Useful if an overview or a summary is needed on a particular area.


http://www.idrc.ca/tobacco/en/index.html Research for International Tobacco Control. The group aims to help develop policies for tobacco control. The site is very extensive and looks at the Economics, political and social aspects of tobacco use and growth, presenting a number of papers and publications. User friendly and extremely interesting, definitely worth a look.


http://www.impacteen.org/states/default.htm ImpacTeen Program Office is supported byThe Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and aims to track the Media and Policy Impacts of State-level Tobacco Control in the US. At present this site contains very little information but it appears that it is still being constructed and so more information should be available soon.

http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/hppb/reduction-tabagisme Available in French and English (although there are differences between the two sites), Health Canada run a page with a number of useful publications available online, some as .pdf files. These cover issues such as women and tobacco and passive smoking as well as much more. Information on some current policies to tobacco is given and various statistics are also available. Some anti tobacco video clips are also online. Advice is available for teachers and explanations of current campaigns are given. An interesting site with some useful resources.

http://www.fda.gov/opacom/campaigns/tobacco.html The US department of health and human services Food and Drug administration page. This has information on a number of anti-tobacco campaigns and policies. This is useful but not all of the site is particularly well updated so some material is fairly out of date.

http://www.no-smoke.org/ Americas Non-Smokers' Rights Foundation. This regularly updated site highlights the latest issues in tobacco-control in the US. Including articles on policy, ventilation and passive smoking, the tricks used by the tobacco industry and access to some of the original tobacco industry documents. An excellent site for a large range of tobacco related resources.
