The TCRC organises workshops on tobacco control especially designed for the European medical profession. As well as giving practical guidance on the action that both NMAs and individual doctors can take to tackle tobacco, the workshops provide a supportive environment in which participants can share their experience and challenges in tobacco control.

Workshops are arranged in collaboration with the national medical association in the host country, and can be tailored to address local needs and interests. To receive further information, or if your association might be interested in hosting a workshop contact: tcrc@bma.org.uk

summer and autumn 2002

With funding from the Department of Health, the BMA TCRC will pilot a series of half-day workshops on smoking cessation to address these needs. Workshops are scheduled to run throughout England & Wales in October 2002 and will include presentations by expert speakers, group discussion and interactive sessions.

They will address the evidence base for clinical effectiveness as well as providing a supportive environment in which practitioners can seek practical advice and share their own experiences and challenges. A toolkit of training resources will also be developed. To facilitate participation, funds will be made available for locum cover.

A subsequent stage is envisaged, should the pilot training prove effective. This would involve training GP tutors to deliver the course directly to their trainees.
