Summary of action, decisions and statements

Since its foundation, EFMA has given high priority to action to combat the tobacco epidemic in Europe. With this aim, it has adopted a number of declarations and statements on tobacco. These statements and declarations set out the principles guiding the Forum's work in tobacco control, and describe specific action to be taken by medical associations and professionals, including support for legislation.

Urged NMAs to use the modules from Smoke-Free Europe to achieve Target 16 of HFA European targets
1988
Agreed need for the systematic periodic review of physicians' smoking in each country; NMAs should support public education on smoking risks, legislation on smoking zones, banning of advertising, increased taxation and reduction of tar levels
1990
NMAs reported on smoking habits of doctors and on their smoking cessation activities
1991, 1992, 1993
Reports from NMAs on tobacco control activities
1994
Formal statement on tobacco and health (passive smoking, advertising and taxing tobacco products)
1995
Further statement on advertising control legislation, tobacco tax, health warnings, smoke free public places and reports on NMA actions
1996
Statement on smoke-free flights (with direct action by NMAs on airlines and airports)
1997
TCRC established: agreed epidemiological study of physicians' smoking
1998
Statement on advertisement and sponsorship of tobacco products
1999
Reports by the the TCRC, the WHO European tobacco programme, and NMAs

Results of survey, TCRC tobacco control workshop, publication of Doctors and Tobacco
